Friend,
I’ve heard from so many across our district over the past two days following the brutal murder of Alex Pretti. Thank you for sharing your views and for your determination to achieve a better future for our country.
We have to start with honoring Alex Pretti – the man he was and the legacy he leaves behind.
Alex was a son to proud parents, Michael and Susan Pretti, and an avid outdoorsman. He was a friend and mentor to many. He was a registered nurse working in an veterans hospital ICU where he cared for the sickest of veterans in need of care. And he was a proud American who stood for every single freedom guaranteed to us under our Constitution.
We cannot – we will not – allow Alex’s memory to be tarnished, or his character attacked, by an administration hellbent on framing every American who exercises their First Amendment rights as a domestic terrorist.
Second, many of you have demanded substantive action regarding the future of ICE and DHS. I hear you. I agree with you. And I’m committed to leading that charge.
Kristi Noem has fundamentally broken ICE and destroyed the trust of the American people that the agency is acting in the best interest of our country. The brutal murders of two American citizens in Minneapolis made clear that the communities ICE enters are less safe than they were before. This is the direct result of reckless leadership, politicized enforcement, and a complete disregard for public safety and civil rights.
Here’s an updated list of actions I’m working on:
▪ Kristi Noem must be removed from office. She must be investigated for credible allegations of corruption and for any illegal directives issued to immigration agents. If Donald Trump refuses to fire Noem, then Congress has a responsibility to remove her.
▪ Congress must undo the $170 billion ICE slush fund. Republicans passed this fund alone and Donald Trump signed it into law, paid for by cutting $1 trillion in health care and food assistance for American taxpayers.
▪ Every ICE agent recruited, hired, and deployed under this expansion must be reevaluated. We know unqualified agents have been hired and training has been minimal. Every agent must be evaluated to ensure they are qualified, properly trained, and free of any history of violating the constitutional rights guaranteed to every person on American soil.
▪ The killings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good must be investigated. We cannot trust this Department of Homeland Security to conduct its own investigation. There must be swift, thorough, and – above all else – independent investigations into the killings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.
▪ Democrats in Congress must oppose the DHS funding bill. We should not allocate another penny for the Department of Homeland Security until meaningful guardrails are put in place outlining how an immigration enforcement agency can be rebuilt with the trust of the American people.
ICE does not have that trust today, and it cannot continue as it currently exists without it. We will not back down, and we will continue to do everything possible to protect our communities.
Sincerely,
Lori Trahan
Member of Congress
